Among the nice surprises in the Coast Guard-is-awesome movie, The Guardian, is that star Ashton Kutcher doesn’t suck. He’s actually pretty good and so is Kevin Costner who returns to the water after he starred in one of the best movies ever made about the Earth being totally underwater, Waterworld. The Guardian is about Coast Guard swimmer Ben Randall (Costner) who is ordered to give up his day job after his fellow crew members are wiped out during a rescue. Randall is assigned to the Coast Guard training facility to teach future swimmers. (Swimmers are the ones who jump out of the Coast Guard choppers and physically pull distressed boaters out of the water). Jake Fischer (Kutcher) is the hotshot student who is all about breaking records and scoring the chicks. Of course, Randall and Fischer clash, then learn to understand each other, and finally become best friends.
The Guardian is packed with action at the beginning and the end. The middle is an interesting lesson (however accurate) in how Coast Guard swimmers become swimmers.
We especially liked some of the training video in the movie because it’s the same video that’s featured on our dvd on the Coast Guard pilots.
It’s easy to overlook some flaws. For example, it’s doubtful that Costner, who is in his late forties, would still be a swimmer at his age.
We met the real people of the Coast Guard when we shot our video, Air Coast Guard, in Atlantic City. The swimmer, Zee, is featured and it’s clear you have to be a bit of an adrenaline-junkie to take on this job.
It’s possible The Guardian will do for the Coast Guard and its Dolphin choppers what Top Gun did for the Navy and F14s.
